This CNN Money Article About Wealthy Couples Seems Like Bullshit To Me

by My Journey to Millions

I came across a recent CNN Money title which read, “The 10 Wealthiest Couples in the World” and I thought to myself it would be a great article about power couples.  I was thinking Jay Z and Beyonce, Tom Brady and Gieselle, etc., couples where they were on equal footing and/or power in terms of business or at least their industry.  Instead, the list basically regurgitates the Forbes top 10 richest people list, weeding out those that aren’t married and going deeper into the forbes list to make sure CNN hit the round number of 10.

The Bullshit List of Wealthy Couples

  1. Bill and Melinda Gates
  2. Amancio Ortega Gaona and Flora Perez Marcote
  3. Warren Buffet and Astrid Menks
  4. David and Julia Koch
  5. Charles and Elizabeth Koch
  6. Wang Jianlin and Lin Ning
  7. Jeff and Mackenzie Bezos
  8. Berard Arnault and Helene Mercier
  9. Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan
  10. Jim and Lynne Walton

Why is the List Bullshit

For most of the people on the list, the couple is not wealthy – it is one very wealthy, high profile person who happened to marry someone else.  This is not to diminish the spouse’s role, but if Larry Ellison (Forbes #5 who doesn’t appear on the list) marries an 18 year old model tomorrow, do they really deserve to be on the list?  Similarly, Warren Buffett had already retained 99.999% of his wealth when he finally married Astrid Menks (maybe it was 98% when they first met) – she may not even own any BRK Shares? And all assets may even be protected by a prenup – is this a really wealthy “couple?”  While Jim and Lynne have been married since 1972 and have multiple kids the wealth was from Jim’s father starting walmart.  If he divorces her and marries another woman should she take the place?  Bill started Microsoft 14 or so years before even meeting Melinda.  Granted I don’t really know about the foreign billionaires, but my guess is it is the same.

I’d rather see a list about true power couples! Where the spouse is actually an equal.
